PUNE: India’s presence at the 3rd Commonwealth Youth Games shooting range and on the weightlifting stage ensured a fruitful first day of competition, with three golds and one silver medal. Ankush Bharadwaj struck gold in men’s 50m pistol, inspiring Rahi Sarnobat to first place in women’s 25m pistol at the Shiv Chhatrapati sports complex, Balewadi. Diksha Gaikwad delighted home fans winning the women’s 48kg weightlifting title, then stepped back for Shiv Shankar Singh to swell India’s medals tally with a second place in men’s 56 kg. India’s Nanao Singh Thokchom, stealthy and swift in the ring against Sri Lanka’s Kumara Weerapurage, led 8-0 in the 48kg (light flyweight) category pre-quarterfinal bout before the referee stopped the contest 47 seconds into the second round. Shanthosh Virothu became the second home boxer to assert himself and make the 64kg (light welter) quarterfinal phase, forcing the referee’s intervention in round three against Guyana’s Alexander Akeem.
