KOCHI: Ernakulam’s M.B. Muraleedharan (seven points), a former State champion and the current president of the State chess association, won the ninth Michael Jerald Master memorial open chess tournament on Monday. The event was organised by the Paravur Chess Academy, at the Kottuvally Govt UP School. Ernakulam’s U.C. Mohanan (6.5 pts), also a former State champion, finished runner-up while Thrissur’s M. A. Joy Lazar (6.5) was third. Akhil Kumar (4) won the high school section while Antony Devassy (4.5) and Arijith (4) topped the UP and LP categories respectively. Fr. Jacob Konoth gave away the prizes. Final placings: Seniors: 1. M.B. Muraleedharan (Ekm, 7/8), 2. U.C. Mohanan (HIL, Ekm, 6.5), 3. M.A. Joy Lazar (Tsr, 6.5), 4. P.V. Gireesh (Ekm, 6.5), 5. Mohammed Fazal (6). High schools: 1.
