KSP starts with a win

BANGALORE: Karnataka State Police (KSP), the State champion and winner at the recent Dussera Games in Mysore, waited for over two hours for its opponent Sports Hostel (Bangalore) to put in an appearance.

And when it finally did, KSP sent them packing in quick time in the opening fixture of the State Association Cup volleyball championship that got underway at the Basavanagudi Youth Club court at Nettakalappa Circle, here on Monday.

The State Cops won the Group ‘A’ encounter 25-20, 25-18, 25-12.

It was an agonising wait for both the KSP players and the handful of spectators from 3.30 p.m. and when the Hostelites did troop in, the wait was not worth it.

With KSP’s Nagaraj, Karthik and even Nagesh (formerly of Sports Hostel) spiking true and hard, there was little resistance from the Hostel outfit, for whom the first pass and setting was just not there and KSP cruised along without any hiccup.

Meanwhile, BEL pulled out of the tournament after giving MEG a walk-over on Monday.

The championship is open for the top 10 teams in the State league, thus reducing Group ‘B’ to a four-team affair.

The top two teams from each group qualify for the semifinals, while four teams in the women’s section play round-robin league. — Special Correspondent
