MANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday announced its candidates for the byelection to the Legislative Council from local bodies — a day ahead of the deadline for filing nominations. The party’s Kodagu district Unit president S.G. Medappa will contest for the Kodagu Legislative Council seat that fell vacant following the resignation of Arun Machaiah. Former MLA from the Bedagi Assembly Constituency in Haveri district Shivraj Sajjan will contest for the Legislative Council comprising Hubli, Dharwad and Haveri districts. Basavaraj Bommai was the MLC from this constituency. He resigned the seat after getting elected to the State Assembly. Former MLA from the Hukkeri Assembly Constituency in Belgaum district and former Horticulture Minister in the BJP-Janata Dal (Secular) Government Shashikanth Naik is the official candidate of the BJP for the Belgaum Council seat. Satish Jarkiholi vacated the seat following his election to the Assembly. Mr. Naik’s candidature comes as a surprise after days of intense speculation of a three-way fight between Veeranna Karadi, Suresh Latur and Rajendra Harekuni. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
