VIJAYAWADA: Andhra XI, in reply to Kerala’s 218, made 251 in 87.3 overs, thus garnering a lead of 33 runs at the end of the second day’s play in the three-day under-16 practice cricket match at the Siddhartha Medical College grounds, here on Monday. Kerala was 36 for two in 12 overs in its second innings at close of play. The scores: Kerala 218 & 36 for two in 12 overs vs. Andhra 251 in 87.3 overs (Siva Charan Singh 51, Rajeev 44, Rahul Krishnan four for 68, Salmon Sebastian three for 51). District team selectionsThe Krishna District Sports Authority will conduct district-level competitions for under-16 years to select the district rural and women’s teams to participate in the State meets for the year 2008-09. Competitions for women will be held in basketball, swimming, handball and table tennis (Group I) at the IGMC Stadium on October 16 and 17. Kho-kho, kabaddi and volleyball (Group II) will be held at the Dr. L.H.R. Sports Complex at Mylavaram on October 18 and 19. Selections for gymnastics team will be held at IGMC Stadium on the same days. Selections will be held for kho-kho and kabaddi (Group 1) at the Dr. L.H. R. Football tournamentNalanda Vidya Niketan will stage a three-day inter-School football tournament for the Nalanda Football Trophy at the school grounds from November 11 to 13. KV Sports meet from todayAbout 8,000 students from all over India are expected to take part in the 39th Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan’s National sports meet which will be hosted by the Hyderabad region. The opening ceremony will be held at the GMC Balayogi Stadium at Gachibowli on October 14. The meet will be inaugurated by Ranglal Jamuda, Commissioner, KVS. The five-day meet will see the players competing in 20 different sports. Cricket matches began at various grounds in the twin cities on Monday. Basketball trialsTrials to select the district men’s and women’s basketball teams would be held at the Port Stadium courts in Visakhapatnam from 4.30 p.m. on October 17.
