Singur residents threaten fast

KOLKATA: Residents of Singur demanding that the Tata Motors small car project be set up at Singur as had been planned before its relocation threatened here on Wednesday that they would hold a “satyagraha” outside Parliament if their demand was not acceded to.

“We will not allow any machinery to be shifted out of the plant site in Singur,” Sadai Koley, secretary of the Singur-based Nano Bachao (Save Nano) Committee, told The Hindu over a telephonic conversation.

“Tata Motors chairman Ratan Tata had promised us that the Nano car will roll out from Singur and he has to execute his promise. He cannot go back on his words and ruin our future like this,” he said.

On Opposition leader Mamata Banerjee meeting the President and Prime Minister on Tuesday over the Singur issue, he pointed out that it was an issue involving the Singur residents, who knew better how to deal with it, and Ms. Banerjee, being an outsider, should keep off the matter.
