Chennai: Defending champions Loyola and MOP Vaishnav retained the overall men’s and women’s championships on the final day of the AL Mudaliar athletic meet, here on Wednesday. Loyola, who had begun the final day with a slender four-point lead over MCC, pulled ahead considerably to finish on 101 points, 26 ahead of second-placed MCC. MOP stretched its lead over Ethiraj to 85 points to total 128. Loyola confirmed its 30th overall title in the 41st edition of the meet by winning the 4x100m relay, the penultimate event of the day. Having done that, focus shifted to whether or not its 4x400m relay team — two of whose members had broken the 400m individual meet record on Tuesday — could set the meet record. Loyola duly did so, slashing a whopping 10.7 seconds off the old record — set by Loyola in 2003-04, according to the officials — in clocking 3:19.5 seconds. This despite a bit of a baton-juggle between second and third runners Blumen Rajansathya and S. Sarath Chandar, and fourth runner J. Premanand beginning his celebration immediately after receiving the baton. Loyola’s B. Ezhilnilavan, who added the half-marathon gold to the 5,000m and 10,000m golds he had won on the first two days, won the men’s individual championship with 15 points. Ethiraj’s D.
