Threat e-mails to Pratibha: one held

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: In a swift operation, the Cyber Crime Wing of Chennai Police on Wednesday arrested a software professional for sending 16 threatening e-mails to President Pratibha Patil.

On a complaint lodged by the Joint Commissioner (Security) of the Rashtrapati Bhavan that threatening mails were sent to the President, Commissioner of Police R. Sekar formed a special team to probe the case. Preliminary investigations were done by Central intelligence agencies and the inputs forwarded to Chennai Police.

The team traced the IP address to a system used by J. Sriram (24), an engineering graduate, working in the Software Development Wing of the Communications Division in Infosys, Chennai. He reportedly confessed to having sent the mails on October 11 and 12. “The contents were basically threatening the President and her family members,” Mr. Sekar told The Hindu.

Investigators said there was no prima facie evidence linking the suspect with any banned outfit or religious organisation.
