TIRUNELVELI: Corporation officials led by Commissioner T. Mohan conducted surprise check in 20 places including leading bakeries, super markets and office premises of wholesale trader here on Thursday to check the quality of imported chocolates, jelly, confectionery items and baby food.

The officials seized baby food worth Rs. 37,896 without ISI mark from the office of the wholesale trader and sent the sample for analysis since its expiry date was over.

“Products worth Rs. 39,052 were seized during the raid and Rs. 8,850 was collected towards licence fee,” said Food Inspector Sankaralingam.

Based on the direction from Director of Public Health Dr. Elango, the corporation officials, who conducted similar raids across the city recently to check the quality of milk, descended on a popular bakery opposite VOC Stadium in Palayamkottai and a supermarket near Palayamkottai bus-stand where they could not find any discrepancies.
