Khade wins 100m freestyle gold

Soumi Mondal bags bronze in table tennis

PUNE: Sathiyan Gnanasekaran of India clinched the men’s singles table tennis gold while Virdhawal Khade picked another gold and a silver in the third Commonwealth Youth Games at the Shiv Chatrapathi Sports Complex here on Thursday.

The 15-year-old Gnanasekaran, a trainee of V. Chandrasekhar, former national champion, pulled off a dramatic 11-6, 11-6, 8-11, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9 win over teammate Soumyajit Ghosh in the final.

“It was a great feeling to be the champion here,” he said. “It was a tough final and I had to put my best foot forward especially against a very good friend and rival,” said Gnanasekaran, who earlier knocked out World Junior No. 12 Shen Qiang of Canada in the semifinals.

It was Gnanasekaran’s remarkable composure against a comparatively flamboyant opponent that held him in good stead. Soumyajit came up with some telling forehand smashes, but was also erratic.
