Phoenix launches own brand of hotels

First luxury hotel in Bangalore by January 2009

NEW DELHI: Phoenix Group Global on Friday announced the launch of its own brand of luxury hotels, Zuri Hotels & Resorts.

The company plans to spend Rs. 450 crore to build branded luxury hotels and resorts.

The Bangalore-based group that currently runs three hotels across India under a franchise agreement with Carlson Hospitality is also planning to expand its floriculture business in India by investing Rs. 150 crore and set up farms in southern India.

Addressing a press conference here, Phoenix Group Global Director Aditya Kamani said “Having been in the hospitality industry for over a decade, we felt that it was time for us to establish ourselves as a strong player in this industry with our own brand of hotels. We will open our first luxury hotel in Bangalore in January 2009.”

Focus on Tier-II cities

Stating that Phoenix Group would expand its hotel chain, Mr. Kamani said the group was focussing on Tier-II cities. “We plan to open hotels in Kochi, Mysore, Nagpur and other smaller mini-metros. We also plan to enter the northern States, starting with Delhi and its adjoining townships.”

About the group’s floriculture business, he said it would expand the business in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. “We have already raised funds to finance the expansion through a consortium of investors and debt,” he said, adding that Phoenix had two rose farms in Kenya spanning 150 hectares, the group exports 100 million roses a year to the U.K., Middle East and Holland.
