MADRID: Andy Murray gained revenge for his US Open final loss to Roger Federer six weeks ago with a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 comeback win in the semifinals of the Madrid Masters on Saturday. Murray turned the tables on the Swiss second seed to improve his record in their series to 2-1 this year, after a victory in Dubai.

The Scot will seek his second Masters shield after winning Cincinnati in August.

Murray broke for 6-5 in the final set after Federer saved two break points before putting a forehand into the net.

Murray earned the victory a game later in just under two hours.

Pennetta in final

Italian Flavia Pennetta defeated Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain 6-3, 7-6(6) to reach the final of the Zurich Open on Saturday.

The match consisted entirely of long baseline rallies, and it took Pennetta a minute over two hours to secure her victory after saving a set point in the tiebreak.

Medina Garrigues took the lead in both sets as both skilfully moved their opponent around the court, but she was less consistent and less aggressive than Pennetta and was unable to maintain her advantage.

Q uarterfinals: Roger Federer bt Juan Martín del Potro 6-3, 6-3; Rafael Nadal bt Feliciano López 6-4, 6-4; Gilles Simon bt Ivo Karlovic 7-6(1), 4-6, 7-6(2).
