Thiru Palu, Girija bag titles

KOCHI: Thiru Palu from Hyderabad’s DLRL won the men’s open title in the DRDO National-level chess tournament which concluded at the NPOL, Kakkanad, on Friday. Bangalore’s Girija Mani (DARE) bagged the women’s title while Central Zone won the men’s team title.

Final placings:

Men’s open: 1. Thiru Palu (DLRL, Hyd, 4.5 pts), 2. Venkata Ramana (DMRL, Hyd, 4), 3. T. V. Jose (GTRE, Bgl, 3.5).

Women’s open: 1. Girija Mani (DARE, Bgl, 3 pts), 2. Sumathi Kumar (CVRDE, Chennai), 3. Prabha Jayaraman (CVRDE, Chennai, 1).

Men’s team event: 1. Central Zone (T.R. Venu Gopal, Thiru Palu, Venkata Ramana, K. Sudarshan, N. B. Jagtap, 17 pts), 2. South Zone (T. V. Jose. M Premsagar, K. Ashoka, N. Prabodhan, Mawade, B. Vijayan, 13), 3. West Zone (G. M. Mohite, N. K. Garia, D. G. Deshpande, Saurabh Shrivastava, Ramesh Chandra, 10).

Santhosh sparkles

Left-arm spinner K.S. Santhosh picked returned figures of four for 26 as host Maruti Homes Tripunithura CC ‘C’ defeated Scorpions CC (Tripunithura) by four wickets and entered the third round of the 58th Pooja all-India cricket tournament at the Tripunitura Palace Oval, Kochi on Saturday.

The scores:

Scorpions CC (Tripunithura) 103 in 30.3 overs (K.S. Santhosh four for 26) lost to Maruti Homes TCC ‘C’ 107 for six in 21.5 overs.

Police aquatics meet

The 57th all-India Police aquatics meet will begin at the Water Works Swimming Pool, Thiruvananthapuram on Monday.

Nearly 600 swimmers will take part in the five-day event which also includes water polo and diving.

The meet will see a host of national and international swimmers. Elvis Ali Hazarika, Arjun Muralidharan, Gopakumar, Rohit, Deepak Amar Muraleedaran and Maninder Anand are some of the prominent swimmers taking part in the meet which is being held in Thiruvananthapuram after a gap of nine years.

CRPF is the defending champion in aquatics and water polo.

The all-India police cross country championships will be held on October 24 and competitions will be held in 12km and 4km categories.

The 12km race would be flagged off from the Ashan Square and will end at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.

The 4km race would begin from Chackai and end at the Chandrasekharan Nair Stadium.

Kerala Education Minister, M.A. Baby, will inaugurate the meet at 3 p.m. on October 3, while Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will be chief guest at the closing ceremony.
