COIMBATORE: Bharathiar University students are in the process of becoming policy holders under the Group Insurance Scheme of United India Insurance Company Limited.

Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam told The Hindu on Tuesday that 2,000-odd students of various departments of the university are being made members of the scheme.

“The insurance cover will be for Rs. 1.5 lakh per annum. The annual premium will be Rs. 35 only. It will include medical cover for Rs. 50,000 and course fee of Rs. 25,000 on event of death of a parent or guardian,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

The main reason behind the introduction of the scheme was for the sake of students who met with road accidents. “Many students get involved in accidents and parents find it very difficult when it comes to extending treatment. Also, many policies include high premiums. This insurance scheme will take care of both the problems,” Mr. Thiruvasagam added.

It would also enable those who discontinued studies because of the death of a parent who supported their education, to pursue the same, with the insurance money.

In case of death of the student, the policy amount of Rs. 1.5 lakh would be given to the parents. The policy would be extended to teaching and non-teaching staff too. All of them would be given an ID and policy document that could be produced at the hospital at the time of admission for any treatment, including surgery. The policy would be renewed every year by paying a premium of Rs. 35 till the student completed his or her education in the university.

Interested colleges could contact the insurance company directly, or the Registrar of the university, for details regarding membership.
