TIRUCHI: The School Education Department has received Rs. 30.12 crore as public contribution in the district for improvement of facilities in government schools here.

The contributions were made in the form of movable and immovable properties - land, building furniture, computers, books, fans, sewing machines and sports equipment.

The public had contributed Rs. 9.6 crore to the Department of Elementary Education while the School Education Department received the rest: Rs. 6.8 crore in Lalgudi educational district, Rs. 2.7 crore in Musiri educational district and Rs. 10.8 crore in Tiruchi educational district, Chief Educational Officer K. Swaminathan informed at the school improvement conference here, held after a gap of eight years, on Monday. Inaugurating the conference, School Education Minister Thangam Thennarasu said the purpose of the initiative was to drive home the point that the public were also active stakeholders of education.

He said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, in his keenness to rejuvenate school system, had earmarked Rs. 9,111 crore for provision of quality education free of cost. Free books, uniforms and lunch, and fee exemption would help students to avail themselves of the benefit of education, he said, emphasising that maintenance of quality vested with the teachers. The Government had ensured the happiness of teachers by standing by them when they were oppressed and restored their rights, Mr. Thennarasu said, adding that the Chief Minister had already announced the implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations.
