NEW DELHI: GE Transportation, a unit of U.S.-based General Electric Company and a global diesel locomotive technology leader, and power equipment leader, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL), have joined hands to bid for a 1,000 diesel locomotives tender by the Indian Railways.

GE was recently short-listed by the Railways to compete for this tender. GE and BHEL along with Railways intend to form a joint venture company for this purpose, an official statement released by GE said.

The statement said GE Transportation plans to supply diesel locomotives based on the company’s global Evolution Series locomotive platform. The Evolution Series locomotive is the most technologically advanced, fuel-efficient and low emissions locomotive till date. With more than 2,800 units in use today, the locomotive is one of GE Transportation’s best-selling products worldwide. It delivers 5 per cent higher fuel efficiency and a 40 per cent reduction in emissions over earlier locomotives.
