Chennai: World No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko confirmed his participation for the $450,000 2009 ATP Chennai Open tennis tournament, which will take place at the SDAT Nungambakkam Stadium from January 5 to 11.

The Russian will be making his first appearance in the event. “I am very excited to play at the Chennai Open. The tournament has become very popular on the circuit.

First visit

“This is also my first visit to India so I am looking forward to playing here. I hope to make a good start to the New Year and improve my performance, playing in this tournament,” said the 28-year-old Davydenko.

The former World No. 3 has had an impressive 2008, registering his biggest career win by claiming the Miami Masters, defeating Andy Roddick and Rafael Nadal for the title.

The Russian, who qualified for the year-end Shanghai Masters, has 14 ATP titles, and has managed four Grand Slam semifinal appearances in his career so far.

Tournament Director Fernando Soler said Davydenko’s presence would add to the excitement around the 14th edition of the tournament.

“Davydenko is an aggressive player and one of the consistent performers on the circuit today. He is an exciting prospect and I am sure the Chennai crowd will enjoy some great tennis action from this champion player at Chennai Open 2009.”
