Request to book illegal quarry operators under Goondas Act

Udhagamandalam: A request to book illegal quarry operators under the Goondas Act has been made by the district administration to the Government, said the Additional Director General of Police CB-CID, Archana Ramasundaram, here on Thursday. Speaking to press persons she said that in keeping with a recent directive of the High Court with regard to illegal quarrying in the Nilgiris the CB-CID had taken over investigation of 16 cases and also registered one case. Stating that special teams have been formed to conduct the investigations, she said that three Deputy Superintendents of Police, seven inspectors and 15 others from various parts of the state have been pressed into service. The investigations are progressing at various levels.

They are focusing on both negligence on the part of officials and active connivance. Lapses which have led to the damages caused by illegal quarrying are being viewed seriously. Ms.Ramasundaram said that though permits for operating quarries had been given till 2003, the investigation will also cover quarries operated illegally till then.

The passage of the stones from the illegal quarries till their final destination will be traced and all those involved will be questioned.

Complying with the order of the High Court, the CB-CID will submit its report on October 29.
