Ltd., a subsidiary of Suzuki Motor Corporation of Japan, on Thursday launched a new bike, GS150R, marking its entry into the highly competitive 150cc market segment. The company plans to invest an additional Rs. 150 crore by 2010 on capacity expansion and new product launches. Priced at Rs. 59,000 (ex-showroom), the motorcycle has been specially designed to fulfil conflicting demands of acceleration and fuel efficiency. “It can give the mileage of about 50 km a litre in city conditions. The bike will be available in the market in January next,” said the company’s Vice-President (Marketing and Sales) Atul Gupta. “Launch of GS150R is a part of our effort to constantly provide the Indian market with high quality products and services. Suzuki aims to be active in the coming year and this launch is a step in the same direction,” said Suzuki Motorcycle India Joint Managing Director Katsumi Takata. According to Mr. Gupta, the company hopes to launch two bikes every year. Suzuki had re-entered India in 2006 on its own with the launch of two bikes after breaking off from a join venture with TVS Motor Co in 2000. The company will ramp up its production capacity to 2.5 lakh units annually by mid-2009 from 1.7 lakh units. At present, it has less that two per cent share in the Indian two-wheeler market, which has witnessed total sales of over 38.64 lakh units this fiscal. The company sells about 10,000 units of scooters and 5,000 units of motorcycles a month.
