Sugumaran on song

Coimbatore: Striker Sugumaran scored four goals in Government High School’s (Ramanathapuram) 7-0 win over GRD Matriculation HSS in a pre-quarterfinal match of the CDFA inter-school football tournament for the Kittu Trophy here on Thursday.

M. Nataraj of Coimbatore clinched the World Swiss league title for the second time in succession in the International Carrom Federation’s 20th ICF Cup carrom championship at the Palm Beach Resort, Lavaniya Mount, in Colombo recently.

Nataraj had earlier played a crucial role in India winning the team championship gold. He also pocketed the men’s doubles silver and individual bronze medal.

Bharathiar University and SNGC College won both their matches with relative ease in the Bharathiar University inter-collegiate handball tournament at the Rathinam College courts on Thursday.

Earlier, Stanes, thanks to Balraj Singh’s (61), scored a 38-run win over St. Joseph’s (Ooty).

The scores: U-14 (Selma Selai Gowder Rolling Trophy): Breeks AIHSS 167 for seven in 30 overs (R. Lokesh 58) bt Hebron 50 in 19.3 overs (Sajeev Rajan four for five); Stanes 64 for six in 20 overs lost to Laidlaw Memorial 65 for six in 19.4 overs.

U-19 (F.K. Irani Trophy): Lawrence School 169 for nine in 34.3 overs (Dev 45, Joseph five for 29) bt Laidlaw Memorial 64 in 24.5 overs; Stanes 179 (Balraj Singh 61) bt St. Joseph’s (Ooty) 141 in 30.4 overs.

MPH Albert MFC defeated OFT SA 3-1 in a Tiruchi DFA first division league fixture in Tiruchi on Wednesday.

Suresh (2) and Jayaraj (1) netted for the winner, while Aarumugam scored for OFT. In the other encounter, Globe FC edged Grass Hoppers FC 1-0. Sudhakaran struck the winner.
