Doubles joy for Kerala

KOCHI: Kerala players swept the doubles titles in the 23rd National junior tennikoit championship in New Delhi on Thursday.

Kerala’s Santosh Kumar and Saran Kumar won the boys doubles title while Veena Ganesh and Sreenithi bagged the girls’ title.

Kerala also won the mixed doubles title through M. Suresh and V.R. Priya while Vineesh K. Anand finished runner-up in the boys’ singles.

The results (finals): Boys singles: Vijayendar (AP) bt Vineesh K. Anand (Kerala) 21-16, 21-10. Doubles: Santhosh Kumar/Saran Kumar (Kerala) bt K. Gandhi/Sidharth (AP) 21-15, 21-17.

Girls doubles: Veena Ganesh/Sreenithi (Kerala) bt V. S. Anitha/ Shilpa Sree (Karnataka) 21-17, 21-15.

Mixed doubles: M. Suresh/V. R. Priya (Kerala) bt Sintesh Pande/Nirekha Padnaik (Orissa) 21-15, 21-17.

Referees’ clinic

A basketball referees’ clinic, to familiarise them with the new rules which have come into effect from Oct. 1 and on three-person officiating, will be held at the Nehru Stadium in Kottayam from 2.30 p.m. on Oct. 27 during the State senior championship.

Another clinic and test, for candidates seeking inclusion and promotion to the referees’ panel, will be held at the same venue at 9 a.m. on Oct. 30. The clinic will be conducted by Dr Philips Wadakekalam, the Chairman of the Kerala Basketball Association’s Board of Referees.

The State senior basketball championship will be held from Oct. 27 to Nov. 2 and it is mandatory for all referees who had passed the recent referees test in Aluva to attend the championship, according to the KBA Secretary V.C. Hashim.

Inter-school basketball

The 23rd Fr. Sales all-Kerala inter-school basketball tournament for boys and girls begins at the Rajagiri HSS floodlit stadium, Kalamassery, on Friday. Fifteen teams in the boys section and seven in girls will figure in the four-day league-cum-knockout event. P.J. Sunny, the Basketball Federation of India’s Selection Committee Chairman, will inaugurate the tournament.

Sub-junior hockey

The 29th State sub-junior hockey championship will be held at the St. George Higher Secondary School ground, Thodupuzha, from November 15 to 17.

Fourteen teams, including defending champion Malappuram and runner-up Palakkad, will take part in the championship which will be played on a league-cum-knock-out format. The competing teams have been divided into four groups and the group winners will qualify for the semifinals.

The semifinals and final will be played on November 17. The tournament is being organised under the auspices of Idukki district hockey association.

The groupings: Pool ‘A’: Malappuram, Ernakulam and Kottayam. Pool ‘B’: Wayand, Kannur, Idukki and Kollam.

Pool ‘C’: Thiruvananthapuram, Kasaragod, Alappuzha and Thrissur. Pool ‘D’: Palakkad, Kozhikode and Pathanamthitta.
