SLN College judokas claim overall title

BANGALORE: SLN College claimed the overall title in the Bangalore University inter-collegiate judo championship here on Thursday.

The results (winners only): 56kg: Rehamath Khan (GFGC, K.R. Puram). 60kg: Md. Jaleel (BNEM College). 73kg: R. Nagaraju (SLN College). 81 kg: Pillanjinappa (SLN College). 91kg: K. Sunil (SLN College). 100kg: Shantharaju (SLN College). 100+kg: Ananth Kumar (Govt. RC).

Vinay, Deepu hit centuries

M.S.Vinay slammed an unbeaten 103 with 11 fours and one six and steered Young Challenging Cricketers’ to a five wicket victory over Duleep Cricketers in the KSCA fourth division tournament for the Metro Shield in Bangalore.

Another centurion of the day was Deepu who hit 102 not out for Century Cricketers which drew with Friends CC in a rain- hit game.

The scores:

Duleep Cricketers 177 in 49.5 overs (Vinay 46, Gangadhar five for 50) lost to Young Challenging Cricketers 179 for five in 39.2 overs (M.S. Vinay 103 n.o.).

Yuvaka Sangha CC 187 for eight 50 overs (Goutham 55, Unith 48, Manjunath four for 95) drew with Jai Hind CC 6 for one in 2.4 overs. Match abandoned due to heavy rain.

Century Cricketers 260 for eight in 45 overs ((Deepu 102 n.o.) drew with Friends CC 58 for seven in 16.3 overs. Match abandoned due to rain.

Good show by Karnataka

Karnataka Circle won the overall title in the All-India Postal athletic championship held at Ludhiana recently.

Karnataka bagged 30 medals in the meet and Harini Chandrashekar of Karnataka was adjudged as the ‘Best Woman Athlete’ of the meet.

Harini won gold in seven events — 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m races, besides long jump and high jump.

In the men’s section, B.C. Shashidhar won two individual gold in 100m and 200m sprints, besides securing two team gold in the 4x100m relay and 4x400m relay.

Easy for Young Star

Young Star (Raichur), riding on a twin strike by Melvin (second and 25th minutes), defeated Ideal Sports Club 3-0 in the ‘C’ division hockey league championship at the KSHA Stadium, in Bangalore on Thursday.

Vishwakumar netted the other goal in the 28th minute for Young Star.

The results: Young Stars (Raichur) 3 (Melvin 2, Vishwakumar 1) bt Ideal SC 0; Regal HC 3 (Anand, Somnath, Arogya Raju) bt MICO (Nanganathapura) 1 (Mahesh); Gulbarga HC 3 (Kirthiraj 2, Manjunath) bt SPG 1 (Dikshith).

Mixed luck for MSRIT teams

The host, M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology had mixed fortunes in the M.S. Ramaiah memorial inter-engineering collegiate basketball tournament which concluded in Bangalore here on Thursday. MSRIT won the men’s title beating R.N. Institute of Technology 32-25, but in the women’s final, MSRIT went down to New Horizon College of Engineering 18-28.

Kasif Mallick of MVJCE and Reeth Kunjappa of NHCE were adjudged as ‘most valuable players’ in the men’s and women’s sections respectively.

Jaibir triumphs

Jaibir Singh emerged as the winner with 148 gross in the Open event of the John D’Souza (Sr.) memorial golf tournament at the Karnataka Golf Association course here. David D’Souza (151) finished as the runner-up.

David D’Souza and Pritam Haridas won the Open team title with 311 gross while in stable for handicap event, Amitabh Poddar took the title with 36 points. Megha Varma and Dhanalakshmi Rice tied for the top spot with an identical score of 28 in the ladies’ handicap section, but Megha was adjudged the winner on better back six score.

Team Open: 1. David D’Souza & Pritam Haridas (311); 2. Amitabh Poddar & Anand Srinivasan (323).

Special awards: Arjun Lal (best front nine); Jaibir Singh (best back nine); Aswath Honavar (best front nine-handicap); Vivek Varma (best back nine-handicap); Rakesh Chaddha (longest drive ) and Sanjeev Vohra (nearest to pin).

Joshi excels

An all-round performance by Anirudh Joshi (87 and four for 12) helped BEML (Mysore) register a 168-run win over City Cricketers (Mandya) in the Sri Gopalaswami Memorial cricket tournament at the Gangothri Glades grounds in Mysore on Thursday.

The scores: BEML (Mysore) 235 for eight in 38 overs (Anirudh Joshi 87, C.K. Muralidharan 46) bt City Cricketers (Mandya) 67 in 22.3 overs (Anirudh Joshi four for 12); Jaihind CC 253 in 48.1 overs bt FUCC 245 in 46.1 overs (Mohan 50); Jo Jo CC 21 in 15.1 overs (Rajesh four for four) lost to MUCSC 23 for two in 2.3 overs.

Hubli Workshop posts win

Hubli Workshop defeated SWR Headquarters 3-0 in the inaugural match of the second inter-Divisional football championship, organised by the South Western Railway Sports Association (SWRSA) at the Railway Sports ground, in Hubli on Thursday.

In other matches, Bangalore Division defeated Mysore Division 2-1, RPF beat Workshop 2-1 and Hubli Division put it across Mysore Division 4-0.
