SRM wins varsity chess championship

CHAMPION: The members of the SRM University team, which won the inter-university South-West Zone chess championship, with their Chancellor T.R. Pachamuthu.

Chennai: SRM University won the South-West Zone inter-university chess championship with a tally of 29 points at Tumkur on October 22.

As many as 69 universities took part in the six day competition. This is the first time in the history of the inter-university chess competitions that a Grand Master, Deepan Chakkravarthy, was seen in action.

Deepan led the five member SRM team, which included the GM norm holder, R. Arun Karthik, R. Premnath, N. Aravind Subramanian and B.G. Mohinder Yadhav.

SRM, which finished first, was followed by University of Madras (27.5), Osmania (23.5) and Anna (23).

The team was felicitated by the Chancellor of SRM, Dr. T.R. Pachamuthu, and other members.
