Centre surrendering to U.S., says Brinda

KOCHI: The U.S. wants India to captain its interests in Asia, at a time when its economic and political hegemony are being questioned worldwide, Polit Bureau Member of the CPI (M) Brinda Karat said.

She was addressing a massive rally taken out by the party to the Southern Naval Command here on Friday, to protest against the India-U.S. joint naval exercises being held off the country’s western coast. Ms. Karat said once India began purchasing more weapons from the U.S. and became its closer ally, the joint military exercises would turn into a demand for ‘joint action.’

“The U.S. is facing its greatest crisis in recent memory and seven lakh people have already lost their jobs there. Millions of dollars of pension and welfare funds of workers in the U.S. have been lost. President Bush and his party are going to be defeated in the coming elections. But the Manmohan Singh-led Central Government is craving for more ties with that country. The UPA has moved away from the promises that it made to the Parliament and is now scared of facing it. The time has come to mobilise anti-imperialistic sentiments of Indians, since the government is surrendering India’s sovereignty before the U.S,” she said.

Ms. Karat said Left parties were for over four years able to pressure the Centre not to enter into a logistics-supply agreement with the U.S.
