Livni ultimatum

Jerusalem: In an ultimatum to potential coalition partners, Israeli Prime Minister designate Tzipi Livni has vowed not to bow down to “illegitimate” demands of parties threatening with snap polls if they do not join a government under her leadership by Sunday.

The Pensioners Party pulled out of negotiations arguing the offer that had been made to them had been far from acceptable. Coalition talks between Kadima and right-wing Shas Party also seemed on the verge of breaking down, after the ultra-orthodox party rejected Ms. Livni’s offer to raise child stipends. Ms. Livni, who under law has until November 3 to put together a parliamentary majority, informed President Shimon Peres of her decision. — PTI
