Colombo: There was drama over Sri Lanka’s capital close to midnight of Tuesday as electricity was shut down and anti-aircraft guns fired several rounds into the night sky, evidently in pursuit of an intruding aircraft. Police said an unidentified flying object was sighted over Colombo’s main harbour, dropped something, and security forces fired at the object. Hotel guests in the Galleface area witnessed the drama in the sky as anti-aircraft guns boomed, the sky lit up in action for several minutes, and powerful searchlights combed the sky. They could also see a spiral of black smoke on the horizon, indicating that there had been a hit. Rumours spread immediately that an LTTE aircraft had intruded into the skies of Colombo, for the eighth time since March 26, 2007. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
