AIYF activist commits suicide

KOLLAM: Tension gripped the Thattarkonam area of the city on Thursday afternoon following the suicide of an AIYF activist G. Sunil Kumar, 26. Following this, a mob attacked two houses nearby. The police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. They continue to maintain vigil in the area.

The police said that Kumar was attacked by a four-member gang that arrived in a van earlier. Soon after, he hanged himself inside the house. The mob prevented the police from removing the body to the hospital for some time.

The police could take the body to the District Hospital only in the evening. The body will be handed over to relatives after autopsy on Friday.

‘Police inaction’

AIYF leaders said that it was the fourth time Kumar was assaulted by “a gang of anti-socials.”

In spite of repeated complaints, the police did not take appropriate action, they alleged. Kumar had opposed anti-social activities in the area, they said. The two houses attacked by the mob belonged to two members of the gang, the AIYF leaders said.

The Kilikollur police have registered a case.
