“Reduce property tax”

MADURAI: The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has appealed to the Local Administration Minister, M. K. Stalin, to consider a reduction in rate of revision of property tax for commercial and industrial buildings.

A chamber delegation, comprising senior president S. Rethinavelu, president S. Jeyabalan and secretary N. Jegatheesan, met the Minister here on Thursday and presented a memorandum to him in this regard.

It also contained the resolutions passed on this issue by the chamber’s general body at its meeting.

The resolutions pointed out that Tirunelveli, Salem and Coimbatore corporations had effected lower revision in property tax. However, the Madurai Corporation had revised property tax for commercial buildings by 100 per cent and for industrial buildings by 150 per cent.

The chamber also insisted that underground drainage charges should not be levied on buildings which did not have an underground drainage connection.

Mr. Rethinavelu requested Mr. Stalin to ensure that the Madurai Corporation levied taxes that were in tune with the revision effected by other corporations, a chamber press release said.
