MADURAI: All leaders, irrespective of political affiliation, should support the steps taken by the United Progressive Alliance government to fight terrorism, said Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation G. K. Vasan here on Friday. Talking to reporters, Mr. Vasan said that innocent people falling victim to terror strikes, like in Assam, was not acceptable to civil society. Acts of cowardice by a section of the people resulted in loss of precious lives and property. People, he said, would not support terrorism in any form. The Union government was taking steps to curb terrorism in various parts of the country. The issue should not be politicised. Indira Gandhi, who formulated the successful 20-point programme for poverty alleviation, was a victim of terrorism, he pointed out. Mr. Vasan said providing humanitarian aid in the form of food, clothing and medicine to Sri Lankan Tamils was important now. The Centre was taking all steps to protect the interest of Tamils in Sri Lanka. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
