MCD to remove all illegal political hoardings

NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has decided to remove all illegal political hoardings from the MCD areas that are in violation of the code of conduct laid down by the Election Commission for the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.

The announcement was made by Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta at a meeting held on Friday after the Opposition members raised slogans demanding removal of illegal political hoardings in the MCD areas and alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party had installed hoardings all over the city, including unauthorised colonies and corporation properties, in violation of the code of conduct.

Mr. Gupta criticised the Opposition for politicising the matter and said violation of the code of conduct by any political party would not be tolerated and that the MCD Commissioner would be held responsible for any such violation.

“The MCD Commissioner K.S.Mehra has been directed to remove all illegal hoardings irrespective of the political parties that have installed them and he would be presenting a report on action taken in the next meeting of the Standing Committee,” he added. The meeting also witnessed a discussion over de-sealing of commercial properties which got relief under the August 12 Central Government notification.

Mr. Gupta said: “Despite being issued directions by the Supreme Court, the Monitoring Committee on sealing has not cleared a single file related to de-sealing of properties which was forwarded to them by the civic body. It is a clear cut case of contempt by the Monitoring Committee and the councillors have expressed their resentment against the functioning of the panel on the issue of de-sealing.”

“Some councillors have even suggested that the MCD should file a lawsuit against the Monitoring Committee for contempt of court if they fail to initiate any action in the matter,” he added.
