Praise for policies of Indira Gandhi

Thiruvananthapuram: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy on Friday said the Indian economy owed its resilience to the policy perspectives of Indira Gandhi. The country could hold on even in times of global economic crisis because of these policies, including bank nationalisation, he said.

Inaugurating the Indira Memorial meet organised by the Thiruvananthapuram District Congress Committee here, Mr. Chandy said India could retain its secular fabric because of the stern stance taken by Indira Gandhi during a difficult phase in India’s post independence history.

Now, terrorism has reared its head, posing a challenge to India’s progress, he said. He said communalism, terrorism and corruption were the main evils that India had to tackle. Emphasising on Indira Gandhis contribution to secularism, Mr. Chandy said she had given top priority to protection of minorities. He said terrorism had taken roots in Kerala mainly because the LDF, with an eye on vote bank politics, had bent backwards to attract communal votes. DCC president V.S. Shiva Kumar presided over the function.

Nationalist Congress Party State president K.Muraleedharan said that Kerala had become the training ground of terrorists because the Left parties had compromised with communal forces for votes.

He accused the Left parties of teaming up with communal forces against the UPA government on the Indo-U.S. nuclear pact.
