Quiz sees an intense battle

Over 500 participants take part in Thiruvananthapuram round

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Manoj Madhav and Malavika Harish of Christ Nagar School, Thiruvallom, emerged as the winners of the Thiruvananthapuram regional round of the ninth edition of The Hindu Young World Quiz competition which was held here at the Tagore Centenary Hall in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday.

The team from Holy Angels ISC School comprising Aiswarya B.H. and Gopika G. Kumar bagged the second spot. G. Anand and Nikhil George of St. Thomas Residential School bagged the third spot.

The competition for deciding the regional winners saw an intense battle between the six teams selected for the final round. The end of an hour-long battle saw two teams, Holy Angels and St. Thomas Residential School (B), tied for the second position with 30 points each. The runner-up was finally selected through a ‘sudden death’ by the quizmaster. The three other finalists were VSSC Central School, St. Thomas Residential (A) and St. Thomas Central School.

The best team name was ‘Young R{+2} Whizzies’ given by Sachin R. and Rajath R. of Loyola School.

Over 500 participants from 250 schools attended the preliminary round, which began around 10 a.m. Schools could send two-member teams comprising students of Classes VI to IX. The session saw participants from Kanyakumari, Kollam and Pathanamthitta.

Managing Director State Bank of Travancore A.K. Jagannathan, who gave away prizes to the winners, said that the competition would kindle a desire to learn in children.

The first-prize winners walked away with an array of gifts – Rs.8,000 in cash and a bounty of gift hampers from the sponsors. They will now lock horns with the 12 teams from other regions at the national finals to be held in Visakhapatnam on November 13. The prize money will be double for the national winners.

The contest presented by Extramarks.com was managed by Quizwallahs. The national sponsors of the quiz are State Bank of Travancore, Penguin, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Reynolds, Firefox, Lotte Caramilk and Cycle Agarbathis. The associate sponsors are DC Books, Mango, Cheetos and Kissan Amaze.

The beverage sponsor is Dabur Real Fresh.

The regional sponsors of the event are CDC Cashews, QRS, Babas and Club Mahindra Holidays.
