Condolences for Santha Narasimhan

CHENNAI: “May she attain the eternal bliss of Moksha,” wrote Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, condoling the demise of Santha Narasimhan, wife of the late G. Narasimhan, Managing Director of The Hindu, who passed away at her home in Chennai on Thursday.

In his condolence message, Mr. Rajapaksa said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the demise of your beloved mother. I can understand your anguish at this difficult time, and trust the knowledge that our thoughts are with you at this moment of sorrow, will help ease your pain and bring a measure of comfort to you.”

Several messages, expressing deep sorrow at her demise, have poured in from all corners of the globe. Singapore President S. R. Nathan, who had personally met Santha Narasimhan some years ago, said: “We were privileged to have met her – an accomplished lady in so many areas – cultural and sporting among them. … You will miss her stoic yet humorous nature and it will be a void that will be hard to fill. …”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi expressed his heartfelt condolences. Governor Surjit Singh Barnala expressed shock and grief at the passing away of Santha Narasimhan.

“Warm-hearted person”

Recounting Santha Narasimhan’s dedication to her family, Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram wrote: “I recall spending many evenings in ‘Farm House’ when she would come over and talk to us and offer us snacks. She was a warm-hearted person and devoted to her family.”

The former judge of the Supreme Court, V.R. Krishna Iyer, said: “There is none dearer than one’s mother who is affection, compassion and concern fondly personalised in a loving figure. … I too feel the pangs of your personal tragedy…”
