MADURAI: The Madurai Unit of Nehru Yuva Kendra has called for applications from those interested in serving as national service volunteers for the current year. Initially, those found eligible would be admitted only for a period of one year. Afterwards, based on their age and quality of work, an extension of one year would be given. Those selected would be pressed into service in the rural areas of Madurai district. The eligibility criteria for applicants are: for men belonging to Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes, and Other Backward Classes, the date of birth should be after April 1, 1983, educational qualification should be undergraduate degree/three-year diploma. Those belonging to Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes should have been born after April 1, 1980, and should posses an educational qualification of pass in Plus Two. Women, belonging to any of the above-mentioned groups, should have been born after April 1, 1980, educational qualification should posses a pass in Plus Two. Preference would be given to youth and women members of forums, those already with National Service Scheme/National Cadet Corps experience and sportspersons. A sum of Rs. 2,500 per month would be given as stipend to the selected volunteers. Interested persons should submit their application forms containing all the details and hand them over along with a passport-sized photograph and photocopies of certificates during the interview on November 11.
