Railways’ earnings go up

NEW DELHI: The Indian Railways continued to be the first pick as both passenger and freight transport during mid-October thanks to its policy of enduring the rise in crude oil prices.

Reviewing the situation constantly, the Railways during the 10-day period from October 11 to 20 earned Rs.2071.93 crore as against Rs.1838.09 crore during the corresponding period in 2007, registering an increase of 12.72 per cent.

The earnings from freight went up to Rs.1388.70 crore this year as against the yield of Rs.1265.74 crore in the same period a year ago for a percentage rise of 9.71 per cent.

The revenue receipts from passenger traffic rose by a good 20.79 per cent from Rs.510.99 crore in 2007 to Rs.617.20 crore this year. The earning from other coaching travels was recorded at Rs.52.13 crore this year registering a rise of 14.19 per cent from Rs.45.65 crore last year.
