Minister reels out welfare programmes

ONGOLE: Minister for Infrastructure and Ports M.V. Ramana Rao has said that the industrial corridor being developed between Nizampatnam port in Guntur district and Motupalli port in Prakasam district will provide employment to some 10,000 persons.

Participating in the State Formation Day celebrations at the police parade grounds on Saturday, Mr. Ramana Rao explained about various developmental activities taken up in the district. He said that buildings were being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 125 crore for Rajiv Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) so that students could be admitted to the medical college from the next academic year.

The Veligonda, Gundlakamma and Ramatheertham projects were taken up under the Jalayagnam at an estimated cost of Rs. 4,500 crores to provide irrigation to 4.49 lakh acres, besides stabilising an ayacut of 1.34 lakh acres in the district. The government had spent Rs. 1,515 crore till date. The projects would be completed soon, he said. The government had taken up modernisation of Nagarjuna Sagar canals at an estimated cost of Rs. 298 crore and the Kommamur canal at Rs. 130 crore in the district.

A pipeline was being laid from Ramatheertham balancing reservoir to Kandukur by spending Rs. 50 crore to augment drinking water supply in Kandukur town. A scheme was also taken up to supply Nagarjuna Sagar water to Markapur town at a cost of at Rs. 35 crore, the Minister said. Seven overhead reservoirs were being constructed in Ongole town at a cost of Rs. 18 crore to supply water every day to people instead of once in three days as in vogue now.

The Minister distributed Rs. 3 crore as bank linkage and revolving fund to self-help groups under the Indira Kranthi Padham and Rs. 2 crore for watershed development programme and Rs. 1 crore under the girl child benefit scheme.
