Kumble’s commitment

NEW DELHI: At the fag end of his illustrious career, Anil Kumble is still the epitome of commitment in Indian cricket.

On the penultimate day of the third Test between India and Australia at the Ferozeshah Kotla here, Kumble took the field despite having sustained an injury on his left little finger the previous day, necessitating 11 stitches.

With a heavily-strapped left-hand, Kumble took the wickets of Brad Haddin, Brett Lee and Mitchell Johnson. He ran back nearly 30 yards to take a good catch off his own bowling to claim Johnson to end the innings.

“It’s fantastic effort. He is a champion and he did everything he could. You cannot discount someone like Anil Kumble who has done so much in cricket,” said India coach Gary Kirsten.

Even the opposing vice-captain had something to say about Kumble. “It’s unfortunate that he got injured. It’s great for Indian team that he bowled today,” said Michael Clarke.

But the nicest of words came from Bishan Singh Bedi.

“His commitment has been the high point of his cricket. I am not at all surprised that he came on to bowl with such an injury. I have often marvelled at his ability to give his best when down and here too hats off to Anil for ignoring the injury.”
