MESSAGE: Students taking out a rally in Madurai on Saturday. MADURAI: A rally and meeting were organised to mark the Local Administration Day by the Madurai Corporation on Saturday. The importance of local bodies in meeting the needs of people in terms of infrastructure and hygienic living conditions in cities and towns was the major focus. Collector S. S. Jawahar flagged off the rally in the presence of Mayor G. Thenmozhi, Deputy Mayor P. M. Mannan and Corporation Commissioner D. J. Dhinakaran. The rally that started off from Arignar Anna Maaligai ended at Tamukkam grounds. Students from Corporation schools participated in large numbers and carried placards with slogans that urged the people to save electricity, use water judiciously, say no to tobacco, shun plastics, adopt segregation of waste at source, conserve water resources, prevent water-borne diseases and maintain clean environment. A meeting was organised later at the Sankaradas Swamigal Hall in Tamukkam where school students performed cultural programmes. Students who won prizes in elocution competition, essay writing and quiz were given prizes by the Commissioner.
