Companies in Cheyyar SEZ recruit 1,112 persons from nearby villages

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: As many as 1,112 persons belonging to villages in and around the Cheyyar special economic zone in Tiruvannamalai district have been recruited by companies that have established their units there.

Around 1,340 persons have been chosen through recruitment camps on the basis of their qualifications, according to an official release issued on Saturday in response to the observations made by Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss.

When the zone begins to function at full capacity, over 5,000 persons will get jobs in five years. This will benefit people in many villages surrounding the zone.

Tracing the genesis of the establishment of an industrial estate at Cheyyar, the release stated that when land was acquired in the year 2000, it was for setting up the estate. It was only after the norms were finalised in 2005 for special economic zones that steps were taken in 2006 to form the SEZ.

Eight years ago, 631 acres was acquired and the industrial estate formed.

A special economic zone was established by a private shoe-manufacturing company over an extent of 275 acres after taking permission from the Centre.

As more investors evinced interest, efforts were on to expand the estate and acquire roughly 2,300 acres.

An enumeration of local workforce has been done. Plans are afoot to provide training to one member each of families from whom land will be acquired. The State government will provide an assurance that those who give land will be provided with livelihood opportunities, the release added.
