VIJAYAWADA: Managements of paper companies have reportedly agreed to purchase subabul produce to the tune of 1,700 tonnes from the farmers at Rs. 1,600 per quintal in the district. An agreement has been reached to this effect at a meeting held with the management representatives, district officers and political leaders. The companies, which were represented at the meeting included the ITC, AP Paper Mills and so on, besides several political leaders from the Nandigama and Jaggaiahpet assembly segments led by MLA Devineni Umamaheswara Rao. Joint Collector G. Ramaiah, Sub-Collector Gaurav Uppal, marketing Deputy Director and other officials were present in the deliberations concerning the fixation of price and quantity for the companies to purchase subabul from the farmers. Mr. Umamaheswara Rao demanded that the managements strictly abide by the arrangement and provide justice to the farmers. He deplored that MP Lagadapati Rajagopal came to visit the teachers’ hunger strike camp outside the Sub-Collector’s Office but did not bother to attend the meeting in the office conference to find a solution to the subabul farmers’ problems. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
