Need for speed: The indoor stadium under-construction at Krishnagiri Sports Complex. KRISHNAGIRI: Construction of an indoor stadium within the Krishnagiri District Sports Stadium is progressing very slowly. The works on the project initiated by the then Collector Dr. Santhosh Babu is moving with snail’s pace, according to people here. The indoor stadium is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 1.20 crore in about 0.40 cents within Krishnagiri Sports Stadium. Kattida Maiyam, under the supervision of its secretary Mr. Senthil, is taking care of the construction work. C.K. Veenana, Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency is monitoring the project. The indoor stadium will have volley ball, basket ball, badminton and tennis courts apart from gymnastics, weightlifting and bodybuilding facilities. Mr. Senthil, Secretary of Kattida Maiyam told The Hindu that they were expecting Rs. 40 lakhs from Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) for the completion of the indoor stadium and the works would be finished before this new year. Dr. Santhosh Babu had introduced a new concept called ‘Fund in Perpetuity’ which allowed the pubic to become life-members of Officers Club with the subscription of Rs. 1 lakh each. The subscription amount paid by the members has a lock in period of one year, following which it can be withdrawn. Receipts for payments were given which explicitly state that the subscription fee is refundable. It is learnt that many citizens who had paid the subscription fee are asking for refund now. The reason for this is best known only to them. An amount of Rs. 1 crore was collected from 94 citizens and was deposited in a nationalized bank. The interest accrued on the deposit i.e. Rs. 85,000 per month can be used for upkeep, maintenance and other development activities at the stadium. The general body of the Club meets every month and takes decisions about the improvement of the stadium. About 73 school children are being trained in 3 disciplines i.e. hurdles, handball and judo. Coaches for other disciplines are expected to be hired soon. A swimming pool is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 65 lakh though MLA’s local development fund. Apart from this, a students’ hostel at a cost of Rs. 98 lakhs is also being at the stadium complex. More than 300 people are using the track for walking. In addition to this, various corporate companies have shown keen interest in developing the stadium with multiple facilities such as a children park with roller skating, swing etc. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
