Matter of concern

The recent happenings in Maharashtra have made law-abiding citizens wonder whether Raj Thackeray, the person behind the crisis, will ever face the legal consequences of his actions. Today, VIPs and politicians are not the only people held hostage by the power-hungry few. Individual citizens have to live in constant fear of personal injury and loss. For the largest democracy in the world, it is indeed sad that national unity has been given the go-by. Beating up candidates who arrive to write an examination and burning personal and public property are not the mark of civilised people. I am a Maharashtrian. I hope that more people will realise that such acts will only bring them shame and breed hate and mistrust.

The Thackerays incite hatred and violence against non-Marathi people for gaining popularity, with an eye on the elections. They should answer two questions: Can they feed all the Marathi-speaking people who, like me, were born, who studied and are employed throughout the country? Secondly, why do they forget that Maharashtra became what it is today because of the investment and hard work of outsiders including Parsis, Jains, Gujaratis, Rajasthanis, Bengalis, Biharis and south Indians?
