Chief Minister to preside over GIDA general council meeting

KOCHI: The compensation package for landowners regarding the Mulavukad road-widening scheme will top the agenda of the general council of the Goshree Islands Development Authority (GIDA) to be held on Thursday.

The meeting of the general council will be held in Thiruvananthapuram and Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan will preside over the meeting.

The road development project has come to a standstill following the demand of a section of the landowners, who own 10 cents or more and have to surrender land, for compensation.

It would require a change in government policy to give compensation for land taken from those having land above 10 cents at the same rate at which compensation is given for those below 10 cents, the GIDA had stated in the agenda of the meeting. The GIDA had estimated that it would require 1.52 crore for this package.

Land belonging to 780 persons had to be acquired for the 5.5-km-long road project. Of this, 465 had submitted the land-related documents to the GIDA and holdings of 280 persons had been acquired.

Adalat to settle cases

The authority will organise an adalat at St. Mary’s parish hall, Mulavukad, on November 13 to settle the case of 185 persons whose files are pending with it.

The Mulavukad Road Development Action Council had organised fasting before the authority office for 75 days demanding steps to settle the issue.

The council will also consider the proposals for sanctioning Rs. 1.91 crore to the Kerala Water Authority for shifting of water supply pipelines, Rs. 22 lakh to the KSEB for shifting electric posts and lines, Rs. 33.514 lakh to the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited for shifting telephone cables and Rs. 37.56 crore for widening the road.

The general council will be attended by MLAs and civic representatives from the region.
