Miscellaneous - This Day That Age

dated November 7, 1958: Permanent U.N. force

The Special Political Committee on November 5 decided against taking any action at present to follow up Western suggestions for a permanent United Nations “peace force”. The 81-member Committee reached this conclusion after the Secretary-General, Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, has said he felt it would be best to wait until the United Nations faced a “concrete situation” in which a field operation might be required. In an official report last month on experience derived from the United Nations Emergency Force in the Middle East, Mr. Hammarskjoeld said the maintenance of “a nucleus U.N. force of the type generally envisaged would be without great practical value and certainly would not warrant the substantial sacrifices involved.”
