Legal Correspondent

New Delhi: Justice M. Karpaga Vinayagam has been appointed Chairperson of the Appellate Tribunal for Electricity, New Delhi, for three years from the date of his assuming office.

Constituted under the Electricity Act of 2003, the tribunal hears appeals, review/revision/execution petitions, and interim applications against tariff and other orders of the Regulatory Commissions, totalling 24, including the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Joint Commission.

The tribunal jurisdiction extends to the whole of India except Jammu and Kashmir. It will also hear appeals arising from the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board’s decisions.

Justice Vinayagam (62) was a judge of the Madras High Court for about a decade before he was elevated Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court in September 2006.

Since he retired in May this year, he has been practising in the Supreme Court as senior advocate.
