The results of the American election are being studied in Britain with particular attention — because of the closeness of the Anglo-American link — but the general verdict in London is that the spectacular Republican rout does not necessarily portend any big or immediate changes in American policy, at home or abroad. It was expected that the Republican Party would lose ground but the extent of its defeat has come as a surprise, and is considered to be far beyond anything that can be explained away as due to local grievances that are traditionally said to loom large in the “mid-term” elections. The Democratic landslide in fact is interpreted as a significant upsurge of what is vaguely described as a “liberal” feeling throughout the country, but at the same time, it does not amount to endorsement of any alternative Democratic policy — no such policy has yet been formulated or put to the voters.
