BHUBANESWAR: A sixth standard student under the Nimapara police station in Puri district knew barely anything beyond studies and playground when tragedy struck her. The girl was allegedly raped by her classmate’s father. After several months, the 13-year-old girl gave birth to a girl child at Capital Hospital here on Thursday. Despite the fact that the girl and her family went through innumerable hardship and ran from pillar to the post begging action against the culprit, the police continued to remain in searching mode. Family members of the girl could not have any idea as the girl was threatened with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident to others. Victim’s father is clueless about the future of the girl. “We tried everything from approaching higher-ups in police hierarchy to State Women’s Commission, but nothing has happened. The culprits are still roaming scot-free,” he told reporters here on Friday. During the day, women’s commission chairperson Namita Panda too reached the hospital where both the girl and her baby were in a critical condition and put under round-the-clock observation. Ms. Panda said there should be stringent punishment for the heinous crime. “We would persuade the matter to its logical end. Our efforts would be to conduct DNA test on the accused if he had raped the little girl or not,” Ms. Panda said. She, however, said it was commission’s persuasion that resulted in arrest of two brothers of the accused. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
