5 killed in Meerut blast
A man mourns the death of a kin in Meerut on Saturday:
LUCKNOW: Five persons, including a woman and two children, were killed and six others injured in a blast in a garbage dump in Bengali Basti near Aasiya Colony in Meerut city of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
According to a State Home department spokesman here, the victims were rag pickers.
The blast occurred when the rag pickers were sifting through army scrap material in the dump. The explosion was caused when an attempt was made by them to extract brass from the scrap material. The explosion was so powerful that the five deceased were blown into smithereens, besides causing severe injuries to six others.
The injured were admitted to the Meerut district hospital.
Senior district police officials who reached the spot ruled out the possibility of a terror attack. The entire area was cordoned off.
