IOB emerges winner

CHENNAI: There couldn’t have possibly been a soul at the Corporation ground, Ashok Nagar, who was not excited. The Vollys Club-Aircel men’s volleyball final between bitter rivals Indian Overseas and Indian Bank went down to the wire. In an intense, see-saw battle, IOB emerged triumphant 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 26-24.

IOB’s Natarajan, the captain, set up the tempo with a superb display at the net in the first three sets. Sivabalan, who started on a scrappy note, picked up steam in the final stages of the contest.

For IB, Sathish Kumar excelled with his perfectly timed smashes in the deciding set. Sayee Krishnan was the other player who won a dozen points in the last two sets with his effortless smashes. The results:

Final: IOB bt IB 24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 16-25, 26-24; (semifinals): IOB bt Panimalar 25-20, 25-18, 25-18; IB bt Sathyabama 25-19, 25-16, 26-24; Third place: Sathyabama bt Panimalar 25-23, 25-18, 25-19.

Special prizes: Promising youngster: John Christopher (Sathyabama); Tournamentâs best player: Naveen Raja Jacob (IOB).

TT tournament

The Mylapore Club-Sportstar 23rd city school students (boys and girls) knock-out table tennis tournament for non-rankers will be held at the club premises from November 21 to 23, under the auspices of Madras District TTA.

CBSE athletic meet

The CBSE Cluster V athletic meet will be conducted by Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan (K.K. Nagar) at the Nehru Stadium on November 12 and 13. One thousand five hundred participants from seventy two schools are taking part in the meet to conducted in under-14, 16 and 19 (boys and girls) categories.

The top two schools will take part in the National level meet to be held at Divine Child School, Meghsana, Gujarat from December 18 to 21.
