On administration: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy inaugurating the delegates’ meeting at the 34th State conference of the Kerala NGO Association in Malappuram on Monday. MALAPPURAM: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has warned the State government against politicising the police and the civil service. “It is dangerous to politicise the police and civil service in a democratic setup,” he said while inaugurating a meeting of the delegates at the 34th State conference of the Kerala NGO Association here on Monday. The Opposition Leader said that politicising the police and civil service would bring some temporary benefits for the ruling party. “But its ultimate results will be dangerous. World history has many examples of this danger,” he said. Mr. Chandy accused the government of failing to act upon the police chief’s report on the alleged police meeting held at the CPI(M) office in Kottayam. He said Home Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan started his foreign tour at a time when the State wanted his presence the most. ‘Drop in tourist inflow’“And the moment he (Mr. Balakrishnan) went abroad promoting the State’s tourist potential, the State reported a fall of 30 per cent in its tourist inflow,” Mr. Chandy said. He blamed the State government for not considering pay revision even as the Central government announced attractive packages for its employees. “The staff organisations with Left leanings have shut themselves up because of their blind support to the government,” he said. M. Ummer, MLA, delivered the keynote address at the function. V.A. Karim, Congress district general secretary, presided over the function. Thalekkunnil Basheer, KPCC vice-president; P.T. Thomas, Idukki district Congress president; and other Congress leaders such as Thampanoor Ravi, M.K. Raghavan, Mangalam Gopinath, V. Sudhakaran, Veekshanam Mohammed and V.M. Kolakkad addressed the gathering. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
